Do you have an ugly tree stump sitting in your yard or garden? Many people hate how it looks and want it gone. But removing a stump is very hard, takes a lot of time, and costs a lot of money because the roots are deep in the ground.

Here’s a much better and nicer idea: keep the tree stump and turn it into a beautiful, natural flower planter! It’s easy, almost free, and your garden will look amazing.

This project works best if the stump is at least 16–20 inches (40–50 cm) tall. If you enjoy simple DIY garden ideas, you will really love making this beautiful old tree stump planter

Important note: If you truly want the stump completely gone, please do NOT try to dig or pull it yourself. It is heavy work and can damage your lawn, pipes, or walls. Always call a professional tree service company. They have the right tools and will remove it safely.

How to Make a Tree Stump Planter

Make a big hole in the centre

Use a strong electric drill with a large bit (an auger bit or 2-inch Forstner bit is perfect). Drill lots of holes close together all over the top of the stump. Go deep! Stop sometimes to scoop out the wood chips and sawdust so you can keep going. Keep drilling until the middle part is mostly gone.

Shape the hole nicely

Try to make the hollow space about 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) deep and 10–13 inches (25–33 cm) wide. Use a chisel and hammer to gently knock away sharp edges and extra wood from the sides. Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly round — the natural, rustic look is actually prettier.

Add drainage holes (don’t skip this!)

Flowers and plants hate too much water around their roots. Use the drill again and make 4–6 small holes at the bottom of the big hole. Angle them slightly downward so extra rain or water can flow out into the ground easily.

Fill with soil and plant your flowers

Pour good-quality potting soil into the hole until it’s almost full. Now choose your favourite flowers — bright petunias, colourful pansies, sweet-smelling herbs, succulents, or even trailing ivy, all look wonderful. Plant them, press the soil gently, and give everything a good drink of water.

And that’s all! In one afternoon, you changed something ugly into a unique, natural flower planter that everyone will admire.

Your garden now has a special charm, and you saved money too. Happy gardening, and enjoy your beautiful new stump planter!
